Lots of people assume that when it comes to taking professional photos in Phoenix, there are two options for locations: urban areas (like on a school's campus or downtown) or a desert location. Both of those are great options, and can make for beautiful photos that pay homage to the city or have that uniquely classic southwest feel. However, even though we live in the desert, there are plenty of other location options to create different vibes for your senior portraits.
One of my favorite places to do this is at the Salt River. There are plenty of different areas along the river that all make for different backdrops, but rest assured, they are all gorgeous. At this desert oasis, you can expect cool water, interesting rock formations, waterfowl and river vegetation, enchanting golden hours, and maybe even an encounter with the wild horses that call the area home. It's the perfect place for the whimsical, fairytale session of your dreams; somehow, it is a classic Arizona location that remains a far cry from the typical desert scenery.
The fun gets kicked up a notch if you're willing to get a little wet. Getting partially (or fully) in the water is a great way to have fun, cool off, and get some truly unique photographs straight out of a fantasy movie. If that's not your thing, even just standing in front of the water on the smooth rocks can create a similar feeling.
For all these reasons and more, the Salt River is one of my favorite locations for not just senior sessions, but family, engagement/couples, and creative sessions too. The shoot below was a combination of all of these, and remains a great example of what the Salt River brings to each.
